Save, Not Splurge: Designing Your Office Space On a Budget

You’ve been eyeing the office furniture store for quite some time and maybe even going out of your way to convince management the office needs a little revamp.
With you and other employees spending 5 out of 7 days a week in the office, it is only natural that you start thinking of ways to make the work environment more cozy. Of course, the management is resisting, “We don’t have the budget for that.”, they say but with the tips we’re about to tell you, you’re a step closer to making them give in and see that the office really needs some well-deserve spruce up.

1. Consider the air.

When people say redesigning the office, the only things that comes to mind is visual aesthetics. But hey, you’re forgetting one important factor in office space planning- olfactory. The sense of smell, whether you are aware of it or not, can affect the moods of the employees. A company in Japan proved this by carrying out a research to see how a particular smell affects the accuracy of their typists. The experiment revealed that with the smell of lemon, 54% of typists made fewer errors, 33% with jasmine, and 20% with lavender. Invest in an air freshener now. Don’t worry, it won’t burn a hole in your company’s pocket.

2. Make it personal.

One factor in company offices that makes employees feel like robots is the fact that it can be too corporate. Take a leaf from Google’s book. By adding in play areas and letting your staff add a little bit of personality to their spaces, they will feel more at home even at work and therefore feel more encouraged and inspired to do their tasks. Whether it’s a bulletin board, a small indoor plant, or action figures of their favorite superheroes, letting them express themselves will surely help keep the positive vibes up in the office.

3. Go for unique furniture.

Quirky furniture, whether new or used office furniture, can add a lot of character in the office. Bonus, too, since old office furniture seem to have that simple, wear-and-tear, vintage, experienced feel to it, it usually comes cheaper. Put one on the lounge or the pantry area. It doesn’t even have to a set, sometimes, it’s all about knowing how to mix and match, gorgeous old office furniture. Or if you want, you can let your employees bring their own chairs!
